Epic Games Store going to hit it’s Fifth year on 6 december, 2023 and the company revealed that the store is still not profitable. In 2018, Epic Games launched the Epic Games Store as a right away competitor to Steam the virtual PC gaming marketplace. In it’s early days the store gained a lot of loyal users because of their great lineups of games such as Fortnite.
Reason For Unprofitability
There are numerous reasons why the EGS continues to be unprofitable. Challenges from it’s biggest competitor steam which has a variety of games from popular to every type of games. Because of steam EGS finds it difficult to stand out even though they take smaller cut of game sales than Steam. This might be also one of the reason of unprofitability as they take only 12% of revenue share where steam takes 30%.
EGS has spent a lot of money to get the deals of obtaining exclusive titles from 2K Games, Ubisoft, and Rockstar Games. But this also didn’t help but have helped to draw users to the EGS, this made EGS popular but at a high cost. There are many other features missing such as a shopping cart and a review system which makes it hard to switch from steam to EGS.

EGS is still not profitable but had a great journey, they launched one of the most popular TPS game of all time “Fortnite”. This game had a lot of impact in the gaming industry and became very popular among gamers. EGS also had a big impact on the industry because of it’s popularity and low market share steam had to lower its revenue share. Because of EGS many games prices were lowered.

Overally, EGS is a great platform for games and gamers. However only time will tell how the platform will perform in future. Still they faces a lot of challenges which they have to tackle.
